How do I refinish hardwood floors on my own?

Andrew Clark 3 months ago

Refinishing hardwood floors is a rewarding DIY project that can transform the look of your home. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to refinish your hardwood floors on your own.

Step 1: Preparation

Before starting, remove all furniture and rugs from the room. Inspect the floor for any nails or staples that need to be removed or countersunk. Ensure the floor is clean by sweeping or vacuuming to remove any dust and debris. If the floor has deep scratches or stains, you may need to fill these with wood filler before sanding.

Step 2: Sanding

Sanding is the most critical part of refinishing hardwood floors. Rent a drum sander from a local hardware store and begin sanding the floor with coarse-grit sandpaper (around 36-40 grit) to remove the old finish. Sand in the direction of the wood grain to avoid scratches. After the first pass, switch to a medium-grit sandpaper (60-80 grit) and then finish with fine-grit sandpaper (100-120 grit) to smooth the surface. Use an edging sander for corners and edges that the drum sander can’t reach. After sanding, thoroughly vacuum the floor to remove all dust.

Step 3: Staining (Optional)

If you want to change the color of your hardwood floors, now is the time to apply a wood stain. Using a clean cloth or brush, apply the stain evenly across the floor, working in small sections. Wipe off any excess stain with a clean rag to ensure an even finish. Allow the stain to dry completely, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 4: Applying the Finish

The final step is to apply a protective finish to your hardwood floors. Polyurethane is a popular choice for its durability and water resistance. You can choose between oil-based or water-based polyurethane depending on your preference. Apply the finish with a lambswool applicator or a brush, working in the direction of the wood grain. Allow the first coat to dry completely before lightly sanding with fine-grit sandpaper (220 grit) and applying a second coat. Repeat this process for a third coat if desired, ensuring each coat dries thoroughly.

Step 5: Final Touches

After the final coat has dried, inspect the floor for any imperfections. If needed, you can lightly buff the surface with a fine abrasive pad to achieve a smooth finish. Finally, allow the floor to cure for several days before moving furniture back into the room to ensure the finish is fully hardened.
